Tree service in south Sioux Falls, where the storms keep landing

Three tornadoes touched down on the south side in one night in 2019, and the July 2026 windstorm hit the southern metro hardest. The south side's trees get tested often.

On the night of September 10, 2019, the National Weather Service confirmed three brief EF-2 tornadoes in Sioux Falls. One touched down near the Western Mall, with damage at Plaza 41. One hit near Avera Heart Hospital and injured eight people. One damaged multiple homes near 69th Street and Western Avenue. Straight-line winds of 80 to 100 mph across the storm caused considerable tree damage, and the most-affected area ran from 26th Street to 85th Street and from Marion Road to Cliff Avenue. FEMA later reimbursed the City for clearing more than 2,000 cubic yards of vegetative debris. On July 25, 2026 the airport gusted to 72 mph, and the NWS said the strongest winds hit the southern Sioux Falls metro.

The south side runs from older neighborhoods near 41st Street to newer streets past 69th and 85th. The trees vary just as much: big ash and maples on the older blocks, Colorado spruce in yards and windbreak rows, and young trees on the newer streets. Our work here is storm response, ash removal and treatment, spruce care for rows dying from Cytospora, and clearance pruning. On arterial and collector streets the City requires 16 feet of clearance over the street, and it names 41st Street and Western Avenue as examples.

Questions from South Sioux Falls homeowners

What clearance do trees need over Western Avenue?

Sixteen feet over arterial and collector streets. The City names 41st Street and Western Avenue as examples. Ten feet over sidewalks and 12 over residential streets.

Our spruce row is dying from the bottom. Can it be saved?

Sometimes. Pruning out dead limbs in dry weather and thinning crowded rows helps. Spruce that have lost half their branches usually need to come out.

A storm cracked our maple. Remove it?

Not always. A clean break on a healthy tree can often be pruned. A split trunk or a crack through a big fork usually can't. We'll look and tell you.

Do you work in the newer neighborhoods past 69th?

Yes. Most of the work there is structural pruning on young trees, spruce care and storm cleanup.
